Lacrosse All StarsKnox drops by the Quick Stick Lacrosse tryouts to get some footage.
This article is copyright © 2010

Lacrosse All Stars
After a couple weeks of anticipation and rain delays, the Quick Stick Lacrosse tryouts were held this weekend. Dressed in some of our finest bro attire, seven of my players and myself piled into two very packed vehicles and drove to Covington for the event.

Signup Tent

Roughly 35 players were in attendance representing Jesuit New Orleans, Brother Martin, St. Paul’s, Mandeville HS, Catholic Baton Rouge, Dutchtown HS, Ocean Springs (MS) and St. Thomas More. It was really disappointing to not see anyone from the Shreveport schools there – I guess the 5 hour drive is just too much. While the level of talent represented at the tryouts this weekend was excellent, Quick Stick is definitely missing out on some deep players from the West Division.

Just bbefore the sesh begins

I had a great time for a couple reasons. It’s always fun to watch high level lacrosse, regardless of where you are, but it’s particularly fun for me when it’s in Louisiana. I love seeing how far we’ve come, especially when you consider that the every program represented in the above picture is 5 years old or younger.

I really liked seeing how far my guys have come, too. Pretty much all of the Dutchtown crew in attendance went to the Navy Camp back in June, and I could really tell it improved their game. When you watch the videos below, just keep in mind that the guys with purple helmets have been playing lacrosse no more than 8 months.

Now onto the footage I got. Overall play was sloppy at first, largely because of the rain, and players were rusty. By the time the scrimmage rolled around, players started to step their game up.

One video had to be sent to YouTube because I maxed out my upload space on Vimeo. Bummer, because I think Vimeo is far more superior. Make sure you go full screen on these videos!

About the author: Knox is a 24 year old High School Head Coach in a small area east of Baton Rouge. He played High School ball for four years, and college ball for about 1 week until he realized his collegiate priorities rested with more important things like partying and eventually trying to get his grades up. He enjoys things that most Louisiana people do – eating boiled crawfish and alligator, a cold Abita Amber, anything LSU, his dog, and his beautiful girlfriend, Audrey. Lacrosse is not listed because most Louisiana people have no idea what lacrosse is.

Lacrosse All StarsLongtime St. Andrew's coach Jeff Goldberg was fired unexpectantly today. Click through for intel and links.
This article is copyright © 2010

Lacrosse All Stars

The Palm Beach Post is reporting that Florida lacrosse powerhouse St. Andrew’s has fired their longtime coach, Jeff Goldberg. Under Goldberg’s leadership, the Scots have won 14 of the last 16 Florida State titles.

Rumors are flying as to what the cause of this decision was, but St. Andrew’s has yet to release much information. According to the Palm Beach Post, “an FHSAA spokesperson said there were currently no complaints about compliance lodged against St. Andrew’s lacrosse.” St. Andrew’s is said to have a press release in the works that will hopefully shed more light on the situation.

Inside Lacrosse is also reporting on the issue, stating that “sources say it stemmed from a disagreement between Goldberg and some parents at the school regarding his coaching methods.”

Said one commenter on the Palm Beach Post article:

Perhaps it was a coaching style of winning at all costs, including blatant recruiting both locally and out of state, demanding local “scholarship” athletes to reside on campus so they could practice more, having students that attended the school since they were in kindergarten who played lacrosse for years not get a chance to play because of the recruited players showing up and getting the spots..the list goes on and on. Yes he did build a lacrosse machine and dynasty at St. Andrews but not with home grown talent and not on a level playing field. The program was good for him and got exposre for his athletes, it has not been good for the overall growth and development of the sport in Florida. St. Andrews is a wonderful school, but he was not a good ambassador for the school nor did his methods or philosphy match what the school stood for. I commend them for not letting a coach slide just beacuse they were winning year after year. Somtimes there are more important things than winning.

This type of comment does lead to the assumption that the whole ordeal is indeed a parent issue. But at this point, who knows. Not many outsiders have had a deep look at the St. Andrew’s program over the years, leaving very little knowledge on the table about the way the program has been run.

Said another followup commenter:

I was fortunate enough to listen to Coach Goldberg give kids and parents a speech at one of his camps. To paraphrase in my own words, he pretty much said that if you felt there was an issue with your playing time that you should look at yourself, not blame the coaches. He was dead on. I can’t say I have ever seen an angry parent who was realistic about their child. Most of the time the angry parents think their child is much better then they are. And somehow, coaches get blamed for that.

So, is Florida lacrosse doomed? Of course not. But this is big news and it’s definitely a tough loss for St. Andrew’s. If you have intel on the matter – or just a random conspiracy theory! – drop a line in the comments section and make your voice heard.

And finally, we’ll leave you with this comment:

My son didn’t score high enough on his SAT to get into the college we want him to go to. Can I get the english and math teachers fired for not doing a good enough job in teaching him so he would score higher?

Zing!

UPDATE: LAS just received a copy of this official announcement from St. Andrew’s School. It paints a very different picture than the previous comments surrounding this news.

SAS Iconic Boys Lax Coach Moves On

Saint Andrew’s School has announced a change in the leadership of its Boys Varsity Lacrosse Program. The School and Head Coach Jeff Goldberg have mutually agreed to move forward separately allowing Coach Goldberg to pursue his interests more fully through his Premier Players Lacrosse Academy, which offers a multitude of services for young athletes and coaches to excel in lacrosse.

“My family and I are proud of what we have accomplished together with the many fine families and administration at Saint Andrew’s School the past 18 years,” stated Goldberg. “We thank Saint Andrew’s School community for the privilege of teaching and coaching outstanding students. I look forward with great enthusiasm to the next chapter of my lacrosse career.”

Saint Andrew’s School is pleased to name former Associate Head Coach RJ Dawson as its new interim Boys Lacrosse Head Coach and will open a national search for the 2011-2012 lacrosse program.

“I’m looking forward to leading the Scots this year,” stated Dawson. “I know that I have big shoes to fill. As a team, we will continue to strive for excellence. Our goals continue to be the same; win a state title and be recognized nationally as a top program. We will work to sustain the legacy created by Coach Goldberg.”

Athletic Director David Ahern agrees and is impressed.

“We welcome RJ Dawson with open arms to the Interim Head Boys Lacrosse Coach position,” stated Ahern. “He is a committed educator in Broward County and an outstanding gentleman who we think will continue the tradition of lacrosse excellence that Goldberg and his predecessors have helped to foster at our School.”

Meanwhile, Dawson has already personally reached out to many of the lacrosse players on campus and is looking forward to the spring Varsity Lacrosse season. He is also committed to Saint Andrew’s School’s rigorous game schedule and ongoing competition with nationally ranked high school teams. Being under the expert tutelage of Goldberg for the last two years has truly helped him prepare for this moment.

Dawson is a high school graduate of Northampton High School (MA) class of 1997, where he was a two time All-Western Massachusetts midfielder. Dawson attended Alfred University, where he received a Bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in literacy education. He was named team captain, Offensive MVP, and received All Empire Eight honors while being a four year starter for the Saxons. Upon graduation, Dawson coached at Northampton (MA) for two years and served as the head coach for the western/central Massachusetts Bay State Games teams in 2001-2002. Prior to coming to Saint Andrew’s, Dawson coached four years at Pine Crest in Ft. Lauderdale. In 2008, he received the Boys Varsity Assistant Coach of the Year Award as recognized by the South Florida Chapter of U.S. Lacrosse. Dawson has also coached for the South Florida Select Lacrosse program and is the Assistant Director for the Face Off Club Lacrosse Camps and the Southern Combat Lacrosse Showcase. In 2010, he was named the Assistant Coach of the Year by the South Florida Chapter of U.S. Lacrosse.

Goldberg leaves Saint Andrew’s following a period of unprecedented success for the lacrosse program. The Saint Andrew’s School lacrosse program has ranked in the top 20 national teams for the last 3 years and earned recognition as the number one lacrosse program in the Southeast by LaxPower.com and InsideLacrosse.com. He has helped Saint Andrew’s develop an alumni collegiate network at some of the nation’s finest universities, including Yale, Johns Hopkins, Brown, Dartmouth, Virginia, and Notre Dame. Overall, the Saint Andrew’s School community is grateful to Goldberg and will always honor the legacy left by his work.

“Coach Goldberg’s departure from Saint Andrew’s School is a significant loss,” said Ahern. “Over the course of the last 18 years he led the program to numerous club and state titles and has built the team to a national standard, doing so with an emphasis on sportsmanship. However, even more importantly, Goldberg’s teams not only had significant success on the field, but his players also achieved outstanding success in the classroom.”

Dr. Ann Marie Krejcarek, School Headmaster, also recognizes Coach Goldberg’s renowned accomplishments.

“I extend my own deep appreciation to Jeff Goldberg for building a successful club program and then moving that club program into the realm of a recognized FHSAA High School state team,” stated Krejcarek. “I also must note the generous support of our athletic department, the Booster Club, and the parents who have all been a part of this program’s success. It has been a team effort, but we have been fortunate to have a legendary coach at the helm of our lacrosse program in Coach Goldberg. We wish Jeff the best of luck and success in his professional lacrosse endeavors.”

Happily, the Goldberg family will still be part of the Saint Andrew’s community with his wife Jennifer continuing to teach in the Lower School and his son Kade being a member of the class of 2020.

Lacrosse All StarsSouthern tournaments now include Louisiana and a nuclear lax-ocalypse is quickly spreading across multiple states in the Deep South.
Time to talk about Deep South lax. Again.

Our state is new to this whole “lax” thing right? The first High School lacrosse team was started in Shreveport roughly eleven years ago. Our official high school lacrosse league was started two years ago, including 15 teams spanning across two states.

Other nearby states are seeing unprecedented growth. Alabama is taking off. Mississippi is on board and working to add two more high schools this year (big deal, because right now there’s only one, and that one team is getting flooded with prospective players).

That, in itself, is pretty impressive stuff… But in retrospect, is it really that surprising? How many times have you had the conversation about how awesome lacrosse is and the phrase “I mean, it’s really only a matter of time till it explodes” has come up?

Exactly.

The explsion is happening. Imagine a nuclear explosion, that flings lacrosse sticks, gloves, shorts, non-white helmets, Con Bro Chill downloads, gumdrop smiles, and double rainbows across the country.

Modern Warfare...Anyone?

It’s spreading like radioactive poisoning, and no one is seeking shelter.

Thanks to a guy named Austin Speni, who runs an indoor lacrosse facility on the “North Shore” , we’re now starting to dig the travel tournaments.

Readers Digest version (since I know most of you will take a glance and go “hah, not reading that much”):
“On Saturday July 24th, Louisiana sent its first lacrosse team to a national lacrosse tournament in Atlanta, Georgia[...] Georgia, Missouri, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Louisiana all fielded teams for the weekend of games. The age of players ranged from U-13 all the way up to the highest competitive level of U-19 Elite “A” Division

Team Quick Stick opened the tournament in the Elite B Division against Top Tier Lacrosse from Charlotte, North Carolina. Team Quick Stick lost 11-2 to a team they should have been more competitive with.

With the continued leadership of goalie Stephen Baay the defense made an impressive stand against the D1 Destroyers (Atlanta, Georgia) beating them in a very physical 10-5 victory. Team Quick Stick went on to beat The Excell Storm and finish the preliminary round with a 6-1 victory Sunday morning against the Storm.

Team Quick Stick took the field for the last time on Sunday to face the Atlanta Blue Jays. The game ended with a 5-3 win for Team Quick Stick and a third place victory for Louisiana lacrosse.

These players were playing for a lot more that just themselves, they were playing for respect. Their victory will be shared by their high school teammates back home and all the future lacrosse players of Louisiana.”

Makes me happy every time I read it.

I’m playing in an indoor tourney on August 15th, coincidentally at Austin Speni’s place. I double dare your club to sign up. Pics and videos will, of course, as always, follow.

Lacrosse All StarsKnox fills us in on what's happening in a growing lacrosse area and puts out a call for more coaches in the south plus other observations from his cajun corner of the world.
This article is copyright © 2010

Lacrosse All Stars

A whole bunch of nothing is going on in the deep south. It’s too damned hot to even think about going outside. One would think our daily shower (recall that it is hurricane season, which makes the coastal states a bit like England) would cool things off, but what actually happens is the rain gets hot, creating a steamy, humid, swamp-like environment. If you’ve ever worn pads in this kind of humidity, you know about “the stank.” You might as well set your pads on fire to avoid radioactive poisoning. Surprisingly, we haven’t had rain in three or four days now, which is nice because I can finally roll my windows down.

Black Jeep + Hot Weather = Hot Jeep

From the looks of things, I should have knocked on wood.

In local laxy news, we had a pick up a couple weeks ago and the turn out was pretty nice. We had two or three middle school kids, and a few guys who had never played before. But what was really cool is a girl named Carrie showed up to play. She just moved here from California, and played goalie.

When she walked up to me and asked if she could play, I have to admit, I was thinking “This is like something you see in a movie.” So I told her to suit up, and she definitely held her own. Props to Carrie Yang for shutting down some of our better shooters, and for going to coast to coast a couple times.

The Louisiana League officials and head coaches held their annual meeting last weekend. Since we’re pretty much the newest League in the nation, we have growing pains, which is expected.

We elected a new commission (congrats to Darren Ball, a Louisiana lacrosse ref who stepped up to the plate), and we made some minor changes to the way we run the league but nothing worth blogging about. If you’re just dying to know, feel free to ask, but you’ll probably be bored with my answer.

There was one subject that came up that we definitely did not spend enough time discussing, and I’m still trying to figure out why. It was clearly the most important thing on the docket.

Virtually no one had input on the subject, including myself – I wasn’t quite sure how these meetings are run, as it was my first time attending. I’m seriously regretting having not opened my mouth. The commissioner opened by saying that the way to get the league growing is to start up a bunch of middle school teams, which to an extent, I agree with.

Personally, I think that growing the game at the high school level and letting it trickle down through word of mouth (little brothers) is the best way to grow the game in our area. I’m not denying that middle school programs would be effective, but there’s a MUCH higher demand for lacrosse at the high school level.

It would certainly be easier to grow the sport at the high school level because of the demand. Middle schoolers don’t really know what lacrosse is, or who plays lacrosse, unless their older brother is on a team.

High schoolers definitely know which schools have it and a ton of high schoolers in our area want to play it. For example, as you probably know, I coach Dutchvegas, but I have players from Dutchvegas HS, East Ascension HS, and St. Amant HS. If we had more people stepping up to coach lacrosse, EA and St Amant would probably have teams of their own.

After I wrote that last sentence, I thought to myself “Damn, we really need more coaches.” If you read this, live in Louisiana, and think you can handle some recreational coaching, please step up to the plate. Beyond the fact that the Louisiana Lacrosse League really needs your help, lacrosse as a sport really needs this.

Only Mike Brantley from Jesuit – New Orleans had relevant input on league expansion. He mentioned there is an urban public school in New Orleans that is trying to form a freshman only team, but needs financial assistance to get it going. He suggested the league support them by waiving their annual league team dues, which to my astounding surprise, was actually met with some opposition.

Really? Really?? Pretty obvious to me now that Private schools have more money than they know what to do with, and don’t quite get how tough it is for a start up public school team. Hell, if it comes down to it, I will pay their dues, but it’s complete nonsense that we’re making it difficult for this team to get started.

Now I’m all worked up. Perhaps a baby inside of a watermelon will calm me down.

Did the trick. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Other cool stuff I got the iPhone 4. Yes, it definitely has signal problems when you hold it in your left palm, but that doesn’t stop me from thinking that the phone is awesome. Sometimes I think its a bit overkill – it’s basically a $200 tweet machine

.

LOS LINNNKS

Baton Rouge is getting it’s own brewery, which to beer snobs like myself is pretty cool. Mid-August can’t get here soon enough. Hopefully another pick up game this weekend, weather permitting. I believe pictures and video will be in store for this one. We will hold our final, official recruitment meeting for Dutchvegas the last week of August. Saying prayers that I will be overwhelmed with the turnout… Have you seen the LAS Rocket Pop gloves?
_________________________________________________________________________________________________

A challenge of sorts: I’ve noticed a lot of major lacrosse companies always post pictures of custom gear they made for MLL players & teams, and NCAA players & teams.

My challenge to you company reps is this: Post pictures of your charity work.

These pro and NCAA guys get plenty of cool stuff all the time. What about the people who want to play lacrosse but can’t? What have you donated to them? I double-dare you to give the gift of lacrosse to a group of kids, and see if they’re more excited about their new pads than the professional players. ______________________________________________________________________________

Just found this picture and thought it was pretty cool. Gli Azzuri have been on a hot streak.

We took a day trip to Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, CT last Wednesday to check out the Showtime Lacrosse Recruiting Camp. Presented by Maverik, Showtime is an invitation only high school camp showcasing the top 160 rising sophomores and rising juniors in North America.

The camp featured players from states throughout the Northeast, Illinois, Kentucky, South Carolina Florida, Minnesota, Texas, Nevada, California, Oregon and Canada.

We watched 8 short games in the afternoon followed by the All-Star Game featuring the Top 48 players at the camp (video highlights coming soon). Here are few quick observations from throughout the day:

Biggest on-field amusement: Neon shorts, neon shirts, neon shorts… That’s one way to get noticed!
